Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr. Markiewicz

Dr. Markiewicz is Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Surgery, and Neurosurgery, and Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Associate Dean for Hospital Affairs, at State University of New York at Buffalo.  Educated in Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Markiewicz’s obtained his training at centers of excellence, surrounding himself by the world’s foremost surgical educators in the fields of oral and maxillofacial, head and neck oncologic, reconstructive, and pediatric cleft and craniofacial surgery. During his training he traveled to the corners of the continental United States. Among many notable surgeons, he received his oral and maxillofacial surgery training under the mentorship of Drs. R. Bryan Bell and Eric Dierks. He then traveled to Orlando, Florida to obtain his pediatric cleft and craniomaxillofacial surgery training under Dr. Ramon Ruiz, at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, which hosts one the largest birthing centers and neonatal intensive care units in the country. There Dr. Markiewicz received training and surgical expertise in managing children affected by congenital and acquired craniofacial deformities. To complete his surgical training, Dr. Markiewicz traveled just North to Jacksonville, Florida, to complete his training in Head and Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery under world renowned surgeon, Dr. Rui Fernandes, at the University of Florida, College of Medicine, one of the busiest units of its kind in the Southeastern United States. He is honored and indebted to his mentors for his training.

In order to satisfy his desire to improve patient outcomes, Dr. Markiewicz obtained a Master’s of Public Health from Harvard University, and completed a Fellowship in Clinical Investigation at The Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Markiewicz obtained his Dental Degree at the University at Buffalo, and Medical Degree at Oregon Health and Science University. He has published research on a variety of topics including Pediatric Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery, Head and Neck Cancer, Microvascular Surgery, Facial Trauma and reconstruction, and Skull Base Surgery, in medical, dental, and surgical journals such as The Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal, Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, Facial plastic Surgery Clinics of North America, Current Opinion in Otolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery, The Journal of Neurological Surgery, and Microsurgery.

Before moving to Buffalo, Dr. Markiewicz lived in Chicago, IL, where he served as faculty and attending surgeon at The University of Illinois- Chicago, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. His hope is to use his unique blend of training in pediatric cleft and craniofacial surgery, head and neck cancer surgery, and microvascular reconstructive surgery, medicine, and dentistry, to care for patients of the Western New York region and Northeast United States.
